Finnair has introduced a new service that allows passengers to ‘check-in’ to their flight via Facebook.
Developed by Amadeus, the new system connects the passenger’s Facebook profile to an aircraft seat map, enabling users to see who has already check-in on the same flight and inform others friends of their arrival.
After completing check-in, the customer can use Facebook to tell their friends where they are heading and their estimated time of arrival.
The airline assured passengers however, that the social media check-in is voluntary. “Customers can choose to travel ‘incognito’ just like before,” Finnair said.
“Many people like telling their friends on Facebook where they are travelling. We wanted to make this a little bit easier and also add some value in the check-in process for those who want to see who they are travelling with and who are open to meeting new people,” says Aku Varamäki, social media manager for Finnair.
The service is already popular in hotels, airports or venues.
