Thomson Cruises has confirmed that five members of staff were killed during a safety drill off the coast of La Palma, Canary Islands, on 10 February.

The statement read: “We are working closely with the ship owners and managers, Louis Cruises, to determine exactly what has happened and provide assistance to those affected by the incident. We are also working closely with all relevant authorities and are co-operating fully with their investigations.

“Discussions with the relevant authorities are still ongoing and in the absence of a guaranteed departure time we have regrettably taken the decision to cancel the remainder of this cruise. 

“We will be offering a full refund of the cost of the cruise element of customer’s holiday’s and a discount off a future cruise.”

No passengers were involved in the incident which took place at around midday with around 1,400 people on board.
