Flybe’s chief executive Jim French has stepped down after 12 years in the role.

French will become chairman of the airline with easyJet’s ex-chief commercial officer Saad Hammad to become managing director.

Hammad will step into the new role on 1 August with the task of turning around the carrier’s fortunes.

According to the Guardian, this includes a strategy to cut costs by GBP50 million and settle 500 redundancies.

The article reported French as saying: “Saad [Hammad] brings with him a wealth of industry experience as well as a track record of leadership and board positions across a range of public and private businesses and we are very much looking forward to working with him.”
French had previously blamed the rise of Air Passenger Duty (APD) to its drop in passengers and revenue, although the introduction of low-cost carriers and other airlines may have also dented its business.
