Four French aviation stakeholders, including Air France and Airbus, have agreed to work together to develop sustainable aviation biofuel.

An agreement signed at the recent Paris Air Show will see the airline and planemaker work in a consortium also including French oil company Total and engine-maker Safran.

A demonstration flight was undertaken last week between Toulouse and Paris using Airbus A321 aircraft powered Total’s biofuel, which is produced using sugar-processing technology.

“France has numerous assets for creating an innovative value chain with its world-leading fuel supplier, engine manufacturer, aircraft manufacturer and airline,” the group said in a statement. “To support the emergence of a French biofuel industry all the players and public authorities concerned must join together… towards identifying concrete solutions.”

The joint venture forms part of the European Commission’s ‘Biofuel Flight Path’ initiative, which is targeting the production of two million tons of biofuel in Europe by 2020.
