Boeing has formed a new partnership with GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes that will see the Brazilian carrier use biofuel to power some of its flights during the upcoming World Cup and Olympic Games.
The two companies will now work together to accelerate the research and development of sustainable aviation biofuel in Brazil, with GOL planning to use the new fuel on 200 flights during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
It will then expand the use of biofuel by 2016, and plans to power 20% of its flights with sustainable fuel during the Rio Olympics.
Boeing said it work with GOL “to identify… the most promising feedstocks and refining technologies” to enable the airline’s biofuel use.
“Boeing’s focus on fuel-efficiency helps us all operate in a more sustainable fashion, and the expansion of our partnership with this new project will further advance the effort to expand biofuel use in Brazil. It also will serve as an example to the world of what is possible today and in years to come,” said Paulo Kakinoff, GOL’s chief executive officer.
Last month, GOL conducted Brazil’s first commercial biofuel flight, using a Boeing 737-800 aircraft partially powered by biofuel made from waste cooking oil.
