The Indian government has given the green light for operations to commence at a new airport in West Bengal.

Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport is built on a 263-hectare plot of land 15km from the city of Durgapur, and 160km north of Kolkata. It features a terminal building and a runway able to handle single-aisle jet aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.

Operated by Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Ltd, the airport will initially be able to cater to one million passengers per year, rising to 2.5m in future.

“Having obtained this final approval from the authority of Indian civil aviation, the airport will now become India’s first operational private greenfield airport,” the airport’s operator said in a statement.

The airport will form part of a huge INR100 billion (US$1.6bn) Andal Aerotropolis project.
