The first low-cost carrier to be based in Guangzhou will launch its first flights this summer.

Shanghai’s Juneyao Airlines has received permission to launch ‘9RMB Airlines’, which will initially operate domestic flights from its home base at Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport.

The new airline has been named after the CNY9 (or approximately US$1.50) promotional fares it plans to offer.

“9RMB Air will develop Baiyun International Airport as its hub, and we plan to commence domestic passenger services in August,” said Ji Guangping, vice president of Juneyao Airlines, during a recent trip to Guangzhou. “In five years’ time, we will also fly to international destinations in nearby countries from Guangzhou.”

Ji added that 9RMB Air will operate a fleet of three single-aisle Airbus or Boeing jets by end of this year, before building to a fleet of at least 26 aircraft by the end of the decade.

Parent company Juneyao Airlines launched in 2006 and currently operates 34 Airbus A320 aircraft, mainly on domestic and regional routes from Shanghai.

Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport is the home of Asia’s biggest carrier, China Southern Airlines, and handles more than 50 million passengers per year,
