Gulf Air has signed deals that will lead to the upgrade of cabin products aboard its fleet of Airbus A330-200 long-haul aircraft.

The Bahrain-based carrier has penned contracts worth approximately US$20 million with three companies – Avianor, Zodiac Aerospace and BEAerospace – to re-fit its entire fleet of A330s with new seats and technology.

Scheduled to be completed in the last quarter of 2014, the project will completely change the current seat configuration on the A330s, allowing for the introduction of fully-flat bed seats in the airline’s ‘Falcon Gold’ business class cabin and new seats in economy. The aircraft will also be fitted with a brand new in-flight-entertainment (IFE) system.

“For the first time ever we have integrated passenger comments and feedback during the development stage of the seats’ design to ensure we meet their requirements,” said Gulf Air’s acting CEO, Maher Salman Al Musallam. “We strive to offer a best-in-class product and with the new A330 seats and IFE we believe we do.

“This overhaul of our wide-body fleet demonstrates our ongoing commitment to offer superior products and services to our passengers while underlining Gulf Air’s long-standing commitment to its international operations,” he added.

Designed specifically for Gulf Air, the new business class seats are 22 inches (55.9cm) wide and convert into full-flat, 1.9-metre-long beds. The economy class seats meanwhile, are 19 inches wide and recline four inches.

All seats aboard the A330 will include on-demand IFE systems with 15-inch touch-screen monitors in business class and nine-inch screens in economy. They will offer a range of movies and TV shows in several languages. All seats will also come fitted with USB ports.

Following the revamp, Gulf’s A330-200s will offer 214 seats in two classes, with 30 seats in business class and 184 in economy.
