Hainan Airlines has placed a major order for 50 Boeing 737 aircraft.
The Chinese carrier sealed the deal at the Farnborough Air Show on Wednesday, confirming its plans to operate an all-Boeing single-aisle fleet.
Currently Hainan Airlines operates approximately 100 B737s, but the new B737 MAX 8 aircraft will see it renew and expand its fleet of narrow-body jets. The deal is worth more than US$5.1 billion at current list prices, and needs to be ratified by the Chinese government.
“The 737 is the backbone of our single-aisle fleet,” said Adam Tan, vice chairman & president of Hainan Airlines. “The new 737 MAX will help our airline grow, become more efficient and offer five-star service for our passengers.”
As well as the B737s, Hainan Airlines also operates eight of the US planemaker’s B787 Dreamliner aircraft, three B767s and 15 Airbus A330s.
