Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ Hanseatic has set a new record for a passenger ship reaching the most northernmost point.
The ship reached a point just 480 kilometres from the North Pole on 26 August at 85°, 40.7′ north and 135°, 39.6′ east.
Captain Thilo Natke explained how the ship reached the point: “Unusual ice conditions made this record possible. North of the New Siberian Islands in the Russian Arctic, there was a large ice-free zone stretching north through the Arctic Ocean, which we used for this spontaneous detour.”
Passengers on the vessel took a Zodiac ride along the edge of the pack ice and then celebrated back on the ship with a party.
The 175-passenger ship is taking an expedition cruise that started from Nome/Alaska on 12 August and will continue onto Severnaya Zemlya in the next few days and eventually end in Norway on 10 September.
