Hawaiian flies to Sendai

Hawaiian Airlines has commenced flights to the Japanese city of Sendai.
The hub, in northeast Japan, becomes Hawaiian’s fifth gateway in the country and will be served three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) as an extension of the airline’s flights to Sapporo.
Services depart Honolulu International Airport at 1255, cross the International Date Line and arrive at Sendai International Airport at 1630 the following day. The flight will then continue to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, arriving in the Hokkaido hub at 1900. It will depart Sapporo at 2110, flying straight back to Honolulu, where it will arrive at 0950 the same day.
The Honolulu-Sendai-Sapporo route will be operated using a wide-body Boeing 767-300ER aircraft seating 264 passengers.
“Our new nonstop service provides travellers throughout the entire region of Sendai with convenient access to our home, the Hawaiian Islands,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian’s president & CEO. “Hawaii has deep connections with Japan, and we are very delighted to launch our fifth destination there as we continue to grow our network in Asia.”
Sendai is the largest city in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu, with a population of more than nine million. Sendai Airport hit the headlines in March 2011 when it was flooded by the tsunami that followed the powerful earthquake that devastated the Tohoku region.
Hawaiian’s Honolulu-Sendai service is the first scheduled service between Sendai and Hawaii since 2004.
The addition of Sendai continues Hawaiian’s rapid recent expansion in Asia Pacific. Since late 2010, the airline has launched flights to Tokyo, Seoul, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Brisbane and Auckland. It also plans to commence flights to Taipei in July 2013 and Beijing in April 2014.
