HK Express has used the delivery of its first ever Airbus A320neo aircraft to reinforce the message of shark conservation.
The low-cost carrier has named the new aircraft “Shark”, accompanied by the tagline “Say No to Shark Fin”, reflecting its partnership with the Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF).
This forms part of the airline’s shark-free policy, which ensures that no shark products are transported on its aircraft. HK Express will also collect in-flight donations on behalf of the HKSF from passengers on the A320neo.
“HK Express is proud to reinforce our shark-free policy and continue to take a stand against shark fin trade and consumption,” said Andrew Cowen, director & CEO of HK Express. “We believe it’s crucial to do our part to protect the beautiful world we live in.”
HKSF executive director, Apple Chow, said that HK Express’ support is especially important, as Hong Kong accounts for “more than 50% of the global shark fin trade”.
“We hope the aircraft… will take more Hong Kong people to join the shark-related eco-tourism in order to arouse more interest in this topic. This is also a way to show Hong Kong’s determinations to protect sharks,” she added.
Continuing the environmental theme, the new A320neo will be more fuel-efficient and able to carry more passengers (188 per aircraft) than its predecessor, the A320. Aerodynamic improvements include wing-tip extensions known as “Sharklets”.
HK Express has a further 11 A320neo aircraft on order, as it bids to reach a fleet size of 50 aircraft by end of 2018.
