Dubai-based hotel company, Hospitality Management Holdings (HMH), is planning to cut its energy and water consumption by 20% by 2020.
The group has drawn up a new environmental charter through which it plans to drive environmental efficiencies across its entire portfolio of hotels over the next six years.
“We are rolling out a robust environmental programme, ‘Think Green’, that is in line with our commitment to provide our guests a safe and healthy environment,” explained Laurent A. Voivenel, CEO of HMH.
“All businesses, including hotels, must respond to climate change by striving to be carbon neutral. By simply checking on abuse and wastage of precious resources, we can make a huge difference to the world around us making it a better place for all to live.”
The plan will be implemented in stages. Firstly HMH will review its processes at 20 existing hotels, to identify wastage levels. Each hotel will then be given annual targets to improve their efficiency. Quarterly environmental reporting and environmental auditing will also be carried out.
And Voivenel admitted that while the company’s target was “ambitious”, it was also achievable.
“‘Think Green’ is a very practical programme that will not only help to improve environmental performance but has amazing potential to reduce costs. Air-conditioning and lighting upgrades, energy and water saving policies and staff training can deliver an internal rate of return of 20%,” he added.
