InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has opened a new Holiday Inn hotel in Cairns.

The former Mercure Cairns Harbourside has now been rebranded as the Holiday Inn Cairns Harbourside on The Esplanade, becoming the brand’s 11th property in Australia.

“The opening of this new hotel in what is a key city for us is part of our continued strategic expansion across Australia, with our brands making their debuts in cities where we are well established to launching in new cities,” said Karin Sheppard, IHG’s chief operating officer for Australasia, Asia, Middle East & Africa franchising.

The hotel is located in a beachfront setting less than 10 minutes from Cairns Airport. It features a range of one-bedroom suites with private balconies, plus a swimming pool, restaurant, meeting room, 24-hour business centre and a free shuttle service to the city centre.

IHG recently signed its first hotel in Tasmania, Crowne Plaza Hobart, and the company will also open the Holiday Inn Express Sydney Macquarie Park in 2016 and the InterContinental Perth in 2017.

These will add to IHG’s current collection of 25 Australian hotels, with a further six due to open over the next five years, including its first ever Holiday Inn Express hotels.
