Carnival Corporation subsidiary Holland America Line (HAL) has announced  a cancer event to raise awareness for the disease on World Cancer Day.

The event, named ‘On Deck For A Cause’, will be ran annually and raise money for charities in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Netherlands and Germany.

For the event, participating guests will walk a non-competitive 5k on all of the line’s 15 ships with 80% of all proceeds going to the following organisations: American Cancer Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Cancer Council Australia, Cancer Research UK, Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid) and KWF Kankerbestrijding Dutch Cancer Society. The remaining 20% will be used to cover programme and administration processes.

“With this programme Holland America Line supports the global fight against cancer,” said Richard Meadows, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programmes for Holland America Line.  “Giving back is part of the Holland America Line culture, and it’s gratifying to be able to support these incredible organisations in six countries where the majority of our guests live. This new programme will help raise significant funds for cancer research, education, screening and treatment programmes.”

Guests who take part in the walk – which varies from nine to 12 laps of the vessel depending on ship –will receive a t-shirt, wristband and reception following the walk.

“I am delighted that Holland America Line has generously chosen Cancer Council as a charity of choice,” said Regina Sutton, chief executive officer of Cancer Council NSW.

“One in two Australians will face cancer in their lifetime and funds raised from On Deck for a Cause will directly enable Cancer Council to provide vital research, prevention programmes, and support services to the tens of thousands of Australians affected by this disease each year.”
