Two casino hotels in Las Vegas have started accepting the virtual currency, Bitcoin.
The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel and Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, both of which are located in downtown Las Vegas, will start accepting Bitcoins on 22 January 2014. Guests will be able to use the online currency in five locations across the two co-owned hotels, including the front desks, gift shops and F&B outlets.
Bitcoin purchases at the hotels will be processed through BitPay, a service that handles mobile transactions. Tablets programmed with BitPay will be installed at each cashier desk.
“I’m proud that the D and Golden Gate will be the first casino properties to accept Bitcoin,” said the properties’ co-owner and CEO, Derek Stevens. “We’re located in the growing high-tech sector of downtown Las Vegas, and like all things downtown, we’re quickly adaptive to new technology. The timing is right for us to launch this initiative, and I’m happy to be able to offer this to our customers.”
Unfortunately for guests, they will not be able to use Bitcoins to gamble in the hotels’ casinos.
