Cruise line Hurtigruten saw website traffic soar 76% while the BBC aired Stargazing Live last week.

Images of Tromso in Northern Norway inspired many to look for holidays to see the Northern Lights, with 40% using a tablet or mobile to search for Hurtigruten holidays.

So far the cruise line has seen a 50% increase in bookings compared to this time last year and has added more capacity to its ‘two voyages to the price of one’ offer to cater for demand.

“This clearly illustrates just how much technology has changed the way we are choosing a holiday. While the programme was on-air, twitter was alive with comments about the Northern Lights and consumers were researching different ways to see them while still sat in front of the television. It shows that holidays can be an impulsive purchase if the proposition excites them enough,” said Kathryn Beadle, managing director.

“Almost three million people watched the programme, so it is now up to agents to capitalise on the current interest and focus on selling Northern Lights holidays over the next few days,” she added.
