International Airlines Group (IAG) has edged closer to taking over Aer Lingus after the Irish carrier said it would recommend the latest financial terms to its board.
On Monday both airlines confirmed there had been a third offer from IAG, although any deal still rests on due diligence, board recommendation, commitments of Ryanair and the Irish government.
IAG has said Aer Lingus would operate as a separate business with its own brand, management and operations and would continue its connectivity in Ireland.
Under IAG’s ownership Aer Lingus would also join the oneworld alliance and enter the joint business IAG has with American Airlines for North Atlantic traffic.
A statement from IAG said: “IAG believes that the proposal would secure and strengthen Aer Lingus’s brand and long term future within a successful and profitable European airline group, offering significant benefits to both Aer Lingus and its customers. IAG recognises the importance of direct air services and air route connectivity for investment and tourism in Ireland and intends to engage with the Irish Government in order to secure its support for the transaction.”
