IATA has said it “strongly condemns” the strike action being conducted by French air traffic controllers.

The airline association said the timing of the strike could even be considered “malicious”, as it coincides with the onset of the summer holiday season.

“Unions bent on stopping progress are putting at risk the hard-earned vacations of millions of travellers,” said IATA’s director-general & CEO, Tony Tyler.

“In additional to vacationers, business people undertaking important trips, and those awaiting urgent shipments will all face hassles and uncertain waits as flights are cancelled, delayed or diverted around a major portion of European airspace,” he added.

Cancellations and delays will plague travel to and from France until Sunday, with Ryanair forced to cancel another 70 flights today on top of others announced yesterday.

The Irish carrier has also cancelled another 250 flights to and from France for tomorrow.

easyJet cancelled around 100 flights today and has already announced 28 that will not run tomorrow.

Airlines have been instructed to reduce flight schedules by 20% during the strike period, which lasts until Sunday.

The industrial action was not as severe as first thought after the larger of the two unions, SNCTA, pulled its notice after negotiations. The UNSA-ICNA union is still on strike.
