The Icelandic government has created a new Icelandic Route Development Fund, which is now open for applications from airlines.
The objective of the fund is to support the development of new international flight routes to the country with the aim of encouraging better distribution of travellers throughout Iceland, improving utilisation of public infrastructure and enhancing the economies of lesser visited areas of Iceland such as the north and the east.
The deadline for submissions is 31st August.
The UK market would benefit from the fund with possible direct flights to the Icelandic regions. Reykavik is currently the main international airport hub, making it the most popular and easily accessible area of Iceland. Visitors wanting to explore other areas of Iceland generally have to take an internal flight to one of the domestic airports or drive. The government hopes that the fund will enable regular direct flights from London through the international airports at Akureyri in North Iceland and Egilsstaðir in East Iceland, making the Icelandic regions more accessible to UK visitors.
