Icelandair has plans to launch flights from Birmingham to Reykjavik next year, Travel Daily has learned.

The Icelandic carrier will add twice weekly flights from the Midlands from February 2015, having already added frequencies to some of its existing routes this year.

A fifth weekly flight from Glasgow was added in April, while a sixth weekly service from London Gatwick will launch in October.

Hjalti Jonsson, marketing and communications manager UK at Icelandair told Travel Daily the airline has seen a ‘great start’ to the year as more British tourists look to take on the hunt for the Northern Lights.

“Tourism to Iceland has increased a lot and the market and opportunity is in Birmingham to generate more traffic,” he explained.

The additional UK airlift will also provide more opportunities for the carrier’s long-haul routes into the US. Jonsson said around half of passengers from the UK connect through Reykjavik onto destinations in the US and Canada, with its Toronto and Washington DC services to go year-round for the first time this year. In addition the carrier added flights to Edmonton and Vancouver this year.

“We have 13 gateways into the US and Canada now and there has been a good boost on these in terms of new routes and passenger numbers,” Jonssen added.
