IHG commits to global water conservation

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has made a firm commitment to reduce water consumption at its global portfolio of 4,900 hotels.

The company has appointed the Water Footprint Network, a global expert in water conservation, to develop a worldwide programme for IHG.

Under the partnership, Water Footprint Network will monitor IHG’s water usage at a local level, before applying techniques to manage and reduce water consumption. The move forms part of the company’s broader sustainability programme, which includes the online IHG Green Engage system.

“We are delighted to add the Water Footprint Network’s expertise to the great work we’re doing towards achieving our reduction targets around water consumption,” said Paul Snyder, IHG’s vice president of corporate responsibility – environmental sustainability.

“IHG has a presence in nearly 100 countries, so ensuring we are good water stewards locally generates significant environmental and economic benefits for both IHG and the communities in which we operate.”

Ruth Mathews, executive director of Water Footprint Network, added that “IHG’s global scale gives us an opportunity to make both a broad and positive impact, as well as to inspire the millions of people and guests that work and stay in IHG’s hotels.”

Through the IHG Green Engage system, IHG already tracks how much water, carbon and energy its hotels are using, as well how waste is managed.

It has also developed almost 30 ‘Green Solutions’ devoted solely to water, including the ability to track consumption on a monthly basis, guidance on more specific water-saving solutions such as metering, rainwater harvesting, and the installation of devices such as low-flow taps and showerheads. These solutions helped IHG drive a 4.2% reduction in water use per occupied room in “water-stressed areas” between 2012 and 2014.
