The Indian government has approved plans for a series of major railway development projects across the country, worth a total of INR240 billion (US$3.6bn).
The Economic Times reports that the nine projects will cover multiple different states and involve the development of an additional 1,938km of track.
These include a new 176km railway line in Assam, a 288km line in Andhra Pradesh, 274km and 153km lines in Uttar Pradesh, a 280km line between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, a 228km line between Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, a 201km line between Maharashtra and Telangana, a 206km line between Chhattisgarh and Odisha, and a 132km line between West Bengal and Jharkand.
The new projects were revealed by India’s Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It said that the new projects would help improve travel across India by reducing bottlenecks and adding capacity.
