India’s aviation rating will remain low until 2015, after the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) revealed that it has no plans to audit India this year.

The Economic Times reported ICAO as saying this week that while India is improving its aviation safety standards, the results would not be confirmed until 2015 at the earliest.

“India has so far undertaken mitigation measures to resolve the safety deficiencies identified by the ICAO, but we will be continuing to monitor the progress to ensure these measures are effective,” an ICAO spokesperson was reported saying in an email. “With regard to a further audit, there is nothing planned over 2014 and our 2015 schedule has not yet been confirmed.”

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which carries out safety audits in line with ICAO’s standards, downgraded India’s aviation safety rating to ‘Category 2’ last week. The action means that Indian carriers will be unable to add more frequencies to the US, and will be subject to increased checks at US airports.
