Passenger traffic at airports in the Asia Pacific region continued to increase in the first quarter of 2016, driven by surging volumes at airports in India.

According to the latest data from Airports Council International (ACI), the region saw an overall 6.7% rise in passenger traffic in the first three months of the year. But many Indian airports posted strong double-digit growth, reflecting the country’s recent domestic aviation boom .

Delhi (+22.9%), Bengaluru (+21.1%), Hyderabad (+17.5%) Chennai (+11.9%) and Mumbai (10.5%) all saw a sharp increase in passenger traffic in Q1 2016.

But the strong performances weren’t only seen in India; double-digit growth was also achieved at Bangkok Don Mueang (+23.1%), Phuket (+18.7%), Osaka Kansai (+15.7%), Taipei Taoyuan (+14.0%) and Manila (+11.6%) airports.

Asia Pacific’s two busiest airports – Beijing (+3.6%) and Tokyo Haneda (+5.4%) – also experienced rising traffic.
