India drives Asian airport traffic growth

Passenger traffic at airports in the Asia Pacific region increased 7.2% in May 2016.
According to the latest data from Airports Council International (ACI), this monthly growth was partially driven by Indian airports, with traffic at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport surging 24.2% year-on-year and passenger numbers at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport up 21.0%.
Double-digit growth was also seen at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (+16.9%) and Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (+11.9%).
The region’s largest airports continued to see rising passenger numbers in May, with traffic at Beijing’s Capital International Airport up 4.4% and Tokyo’s Haneda Airport up 2.4%. Guangzhou’s Baiyun International Airport saw growth of 10.0% while Kunming’s Changshui International Airport increased 8.2%, reflecting the continued strength of the Chinese market.
According to data from IATA, India and China are the two fastest growing major domestic aviation markets in the world.
