The Indian government is planning to speed up the process of issuing licenses to foreign pilots, in an effort to ease a shortage of pilots in the country.
The Economic Times reported the country’s Civil Aviation Ministry as saying that he has requested a shortening of the time taken to issue licenses.
“It takes only seven days for the DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) to issue… licence to foreign pilots, but the whole process takes more than 60 days due to the security clearance that comes from the Home Ministry,” an unnamed ministry official was quoted saying.
“The director general has asked the Civil Aviation Ministry to raise the issue with the Home Ministry and it will be raised.”
The Indian government is officially planning to phase out foreign pilots by year-end 2016, but it appears unlikely that this deadline will be met, as airlines expand their fleets and demand for pilots increases.
