India is aiming to increase its regional air connectivity with the development of five new airports.
The Economic Times reports that the new airports will serve small “tier three” cities in several states, including Hubli and Belgaum in Karnataka, Kishangarh in Rajasthan, Jharsuguda in Odisha and Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh.
The new projects were detailed by India’s Minister of Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation, Dr Mahesh Sharma. Combined, the five projects will cost approximately INR7.4 billion (US$115 million).
Construction work has already started on the new airports, although the exact timeline for the completion of the projects is yet to be announced.
India’s government has vowed to improve air connectivity to the country’s more remote regions.
