The Indian government has unveiled plans to develop tourism on its islands.
The country’s Ministry of Tourism said recently that it will extend Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to states and union territories for the development of tourism infrastructure in island destinations.
This follows the recent launch of a new tourism circuit to include coastal areas, backwaters and mangroves, as well as the promotion of cruise tourism.
A group of ministries, including Home Affairs, Tourism, Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Shipping, along with the Archaeological Survey of India and other maritime agencies, have been tasked with identifying islands for “holistic development”, including those with tourism potential.
India owns more than 1,200 islands, the most famous of which are the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. But the southern states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also home to largest numbers of offshore islands.
