India will open another consulate in the US to cater to the needs of Indian-Americans living in the Pacific Northwest, India Today reports.
According to a joint statement issued recently, following talks between Narendra Modi and Barack Obama at the White House, the two sides committed to opening additional consulates in each other’s country. India’s new facility will be located in Seattle, while the US location in India has not been confirmed.
Presidents Modi and Obama also announced that the US and India will be “Travel and Tourism Partner Countries” for 2017, and that they are committed to facilitating visas for the citizens of both countries.
According to the newspaper, the US is seeing a growing number of Indian students studying in the country, which increased by 29% to nearly 133,000 in 2014-2015. And through the ‘Passport to India’ programme, the US government encourages American students to study in India.
More than a million Americans travelled to India in 2015, making it one of the country’s largest source markets.
