Indian airlines will start flying to under- or unserved airports from January 2017, the government has confirmed.
Speaking in parliament this week, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju said that a scheme to boost connectivity to more remote parts of the country would get underway at the start of next year.
“The regional connectivity scheme will be a reality by January 2017,” Raju was quoted saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI).
The ministry launched the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), called UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), last month. There are currently more than 400 unserved airports or airstrips across India, as well as 17 facilities that are classified as under-served.
