The Indian government will proceed with plans to privatise two major airports.
The Economic Times reported an unnamed official with the country’s Ministry of Civil Aviation as saying on Monday that Jaipur International Airport and Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport will both be privatised.
This marks a revision of an original plan however, which would have seen six major airports privatised. Instead, management contracts will be awarded for Kolkata and Chennai airports, while the privatisation of Guwahati and Lucknow airports has been put on hold.
“Since the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has invested a lot of money in upgrading airports at Kolkata and Chennai they will be awarded on management contract,” the official told the newspaper, on condition of anonymity. “The airports in Guwahati and Lucknow have been put off the list for the time being. We may decide to take it up at a later stage.”
The plans to privatise the six airports were initiated by the previous government.
