Indian airports drive Asian growth

Airport traffic in the Asia Pacific region continued to climb in September 2014, driven by the rapid expansion of passenger numbers in India.
According to the latest data from Airports Council International (ACI), the region’s passenger traffic rose 5.1% during the month.
And three of the five fastest-growing airports in Asia Pacific were located in India. Bengaluru International Airport (+54.4%) achieved the region’s strongest traffic growth in September 2014, while Goa International Airport (+34.3%) and Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (+34.0%) also surged.
And this airport data correlates with a rise in passenger numbers reported by airlines. According to IATA’s monthly figures, India’s domestic passenger traffic increased 26.3% in September 2014. This also ties in with the fact that across Asia Pacific, the growth of domestic airport traffic (+7.1%) far exceeded that of international traffic (+2.6%).
Elsewhere in Asia, Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (+35.6%) and Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport in Palembang, Indonesia, (+34.3%) handled significantly more passengers.
For the first nine months of the year, airport traffic in Asia Pacific has risen 4.7%. The busiest airports during this period were Beijing Capital International Airport, Tokyo Haneda Airport, Hong Kong International Airport and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
