Indian arrivals continue to climb in May

The number of international visitor arrivals to India continued to increase in May 2016.
According to the latest data from the country’s Ministry of Tourism, India welcomed 529,000 overseas visitors last month, up 3.7% compared to May 2015. Tourism revenues for the month increased 8.2% to INR102.85 billion (US$1.55 billion).
For the second consecutive month, Bangladesh accounted for the largest share of arrivals to India. More than one-in-five (20.5%) international arrivals to India in May was Bangladeshi. The US accounted for a further 15.7% of the total, followed by the UK (7.6%), Malaysia (3.7%) and Sri Lanka (3.4%). China (3.2%), Japan (2.7%), Canada (2.6%), Germany (2.5%) and Australia (2.4%) completed the top 10 source countries.
Delhi Airport accounted for the highest proportion of arriving visitors (26.4%), followed by Mumbai Airport (17.3%) and the Haridaspur land border crossing with Bangladesh (11.8%).
For the first five months of 2016, India has now welcomed a total of 3.64 million international visitors, up 9.1% compared to same period last year.
