The new Indian bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will travel under the sea, it has been revealed.

The Economic Times reports that the 508km line will include a 21km-long under-sea tunnel section near Thane Creek in Maharashtra. The majority of the track however, will be elevated above the ground.

Estimated to cost about INR976 billion (US$14.8bn), the project is largely being funded by Japan, which has agreed a “soft-loan” with India.

Construction work is expected to begin by the end of 2018 and the line is due to be completed by 2024-25. There will be 11 stations along the route, including Thane, Surat and Vadodara.

The new high-speed train is expected to cover the Mumbai-Ahmedabad journey in just over two hours, running at a maximum speed of 350kph.
