Two Indian cities topped the Asia Pacific rankings in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice awards for “Destinations on the Rise”.
The world’s largest travel site revealed this week that Delhi and Bengaluru saw the biggest improvements in positive feedback by TripAdvisor users, in terms of reviews and interest in the cities’ accommodation, restaurants and attractions.
Delhi also came seventh in the global list, making it the only Asian city in the worldwide top 10.
“Our well-travelled community has helped us identify the destinations around the world that are gaining in interest and popularity,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor. “We hope these destinations inspire those planning their travel for 2016 to book trips to these locales that feature excellent hotels, restaurants and attractions, and also provide a great vacation value.”
Delhi, which topped the Asia Pacific list, was described by TripAdvisor as “a vibrant tapestry of historical relics, cultural display, satellite neighbourhoods and mega malls”. The city also experienced a 28% year-on-year rise in booking interest, measured in terms of ‘meta clicks’.
Second place Bengaluru, which TripAdvisor said features “breathtaking locales that provide a relaxing respite from the bustling city centre”, registered a 46% jump in booking interest.
The Thai resort destination of Khao Lak was third in the Asian list, followed by Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo, Phuket’s Karon area, Bali’s Sanur, Armenia’s capital Yerevan, the Vietnamese beach resort of Nha Trang, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, and the historic Vietnamese city of Hue.
The Mexican resort of Tullum was named the world’s top “Destination on the Rise”, ahead of Cartagena in Colombia and the Portuguese city of Porto.
