The Indian government has pledged INR6 billion (US$90.4 million) to boost the tourism industry in the northeast state of Bihar.

The funding, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a visit to the state this week, forms part of a huge INR1.25 trillion development package for Bihar.

India’s Ministry of Tourism said it plans to develop seven tourism circuits in the state, including the Vikramshila Circuit (which will be allocated INR2bn), the Sultanganj to Deoghar Circuit (INR500m), Patna Sahib Circuit (INR500m), Mahatma Gandhi Circuit (INR500m), Ramayana Circuit (INR1bn), Jain Circuit (INR500m) and a circuit for the Mandar Hills and Ang Kshetra (INR500m).

“Keeping in view the vast tourism potential of the state of Bihar, the Ministry of Tourism decides to consider seven tourism circuits,” the ministry said.

“Their development would be carried out… under plan schemes of Swadesh Darshan and PRASAD,” it added, referring to the government’s national schemes for developing themed tourism circuits and pilgrimage routes.

The ministry has also allocated INR500m to the development of a new travel and tourism training college in Bihar.
