India’s fastest train, the Gatimaan Express, will launch this financial year, which ends on 31 March 2016.

The Economic Times reported Arun Saxena, general manager of North Central Railway, as confirming this week that the 160kph train has completed a series of trial runs and will start operating the Delhi-Agra route within the next few months.

“In its all trial runs, semi-high-speed Gatimaan has successfully achieved the set parameters and we can now start the operations by the end of financial year,” Saxena was quoted saying by the newspaper.

On the most recent trial run, the Gatimaan Express covered the 195km journey between Delhi and Agra in one hour and 25 minutes. Currently, the Bhopal Habibganj Shatabdi Express takes more than two hours to run between the two cities.

Fares on the new train will be higher than the existing service, ranging from INR540 to INR1,365 (approx. US$8.30 to US$21).
