The MICE sector could account for up to 7% of total international visitor arrivals to Indonesia in 2016, the country’s Tourism Ministry has revealed.
The government has set a target of 12 million overseas visitors this year, meaning that the country could attract up to 840,000 MICE delegates. And according to Vinsensius Jemadu, the Tourism Ministry’s assistant deputy of development for Asia Pacific, this target is still relatively low.
“The target is not too high as MICE facilities are found only in certain areas. MICE facilities are available only in Bali, Jakarta and Bandung,” Vinsensius was reported saying by the Antara news agency.
He added that the government would be more aggressive in its MICE strategy this year, with plans to expand the country’s capability to host major international events. Other initiatives being taken to attract MICE visitors include the allocation of special airport channels for arriving delegates.
“The Tourism Ministry will cooperate with other ministries or agencies in seeking to make Indonesia selected to host of more international events,” Vinsensius stated.
Indonesia still ranks below neighbouring nations, such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, in terms of the number of international events it hosts. But by 2019, the country is planning to attract up to 20m international visitor arrivals, and MICE visitors could comprise up to 20% of this total.
