Sriwijaya Air’s fleet modernisation programme has taken a major step forward, with the delivery of its first two Boeing 737-900ER (extended range) aircraft.
The new single-aisle jets become the first ever brand new aircraft purchased by the Indonesian carrier, and form part of a long-term plan to bring in 27 new aircraft in the coming years, to replace its aging fleet.
“Today is a very important day for Sriwijaya Air, with the delivery of our first all-new airplanes,” said Chandra Lie, president of Sriwijaya Air. “These new 737-900ERs allow us to remain a leader in the market with superior economics and the ability to provide our customers with a world-class cabin experience.”
The Jakarta-based airline operates an all-B737 fleet, but the majority of these are older B737-300s, -400s and -500s. Following the arrival of the two new B737-900ERs, Sriwijaya still has outstanding orders for a five more B737-800s and 20 B737 MAX 8s, which will gradually replace its existing jets.
The B737-900ERs come equipped with Boeing’s ‘Sky Interior’, which features LED lighting and larger overhead storage bins.
The largest version of the single-aisle B737 series, the B737-900ER can accommodate up to 220 passengers, depending on the seating layout. Sriwijaya usually operates a two-cabin configuration with business and economy class options.
