IHG has signed a deal to bring its luxury InterContinental hotel brand to Chennai.

The agreement, with Adyar Gate Hotels Ltd, will see the 106-room InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort open later this year, becoming only the second InterContinental-branded hotel in India following the InterContinental Mumbai Marine Drive.

This is the second hotel partnership between IHG and Adyar Gate, following an earlier agreement for a new Crowne Plaza in Chennai.

“With its growing popularity as a tourism destination, the Tamil Nadu capital is a key growth city for us and, with its proximity to both the business district and tourist attractions such as the UNESCO World Heritage site at Mahabalipuram, the location of the new InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort is second to none,” said Shantha de Silva, IHG’s head of Southwest Asia.

“We are delighted to be working with Adyar Gate Hotels Limited to manage this great resort and are confident our global scale and system will help us drive revenue and occupancy in the resort when it opens later this year.”

Once open, InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort will feature a range of upscale amenities including two restaurants, a bar, spa, health club, outdoor swimming pool and facilities for large-scale events.

IHG now has a pipeline of four hotels in Chennai covering its InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express brands. These will join the existing Holiday Inn Express Chennai Mahindra World City in the southern Indian city.
