A consortium including low-cost carrier Vietjet is planning to build a new international terminal at Cam Ranh International Airport, which serves the beach resort of Nha Trang.
Thanh Nien News reports that the VND3.4 trillion (US$150 million) project will expand the airport’s capacity from the current 1.5m passengers a year to more than 2.5m by 2020 and six million by 2030.
The development will be a joint venture between Vietjet and Cam Ranh International Terminal JSC, which is part-owned by Airports Corporation of Vietnam.
If approved, construction of the second terminal will start later this year, and it is expected to commence operations by December 2017.
Vietjet currently operates four scheduled flights from Cam Ranh, connecting to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong and Thanh Hoa. But it also provides a series of international charter services from mainland China, transporting tourists to Nha Trang’s beaches from major cities such as Shanghai and Chongqing.
