Adventure tour operator, Intrepid Travel, has launched two new sailing itineraries that take travellers to a group of remote islands off the coast of Myanmar.

Starting from November 2013, Intrepid’s ‘Burma Sailing Trip’ itineraries will take small groups to the Myeik Archipelago (also known as the Mergui Archipelago), which comprises more than 800 islands. Intrepid will offer two tour options, one starting in Yangon and the other starting in Bangkok. Both will fly travellers to the Thai border town of Ranong and transfer by boat to Kawthoung, at the southernmost tip of Burma, before setting sail around the islands on a yacht.

“While backpackers and honeymooners have long-flocked to Thailand and Indonesia for a slice of beach paradise, Burma’s islands are one of the world’s best-kept secrets,” said James Thornton, Intrepid Travel’s managing director.

“Travellers who sail around Burma’s islands with Intrepid will be impressed by pristine coastlines, jungle forests and historical sites dating back to the Stone Age, and they will also get a glimpse of a culture that remains virtually untouched by tourism.”

During the trips, travellers will be able to explore the area’s seas, beaches and jungles, with the chance of encountering whale sharks and sea turtles. The trip will also include a trip to a community of ‘sea gypsies’ on Bo Cho Island.
