Japan Transocean Air (JTA), the Okinawa-based subsidiary of JAL, has finalised an order for six new aircraft.
The Boeing 737-800s will be delivered from 2016, marking the start of the airline’s fleet renewal programme.
“This order is a key part of our strategy to bring the highest levels of comfort, amenity and convenience to the people of Okinawa, by continuing to operate the most reliable and fuel-efficient aircraft available today and in the future,” said Manabu Sato, president of JTA and executive officer at JAL.
The order, which was first announced in March, is valued at more than US$500 million at list prices. As part of the agreement, JTA will also have the ability to switch to the fuel-efficient B737 MAX version at a later date.
Based in Okinawa, JTA currently operates a fleet of older B737-400 aircraft on domestic routes within Okinawa, as well as linking the islands with major Japanese cities.
