Jetstar Asia has received the first of six new Airbus A320s, as it embarks on a major fleet renewal programme.
The Singapore-based airline will use the aircraft to replace the older A320s currently in its fleet. The six deliveries will bring down the average age of Jetstar’s fleet to three years, while the addition of one extra aircraft will expand the total fleet size to 17 aircraft.
“Maintaining a young fleet of A320s translates to significant cost savings, and operational improvements, thereby allowing us to offer a superior travel experience at consistently low fares,” said the airline’s CEO, Barathan Pasupathi.
“This investment reflects Jetstar’s commitment to its Singapore hub, where we continue to grow routes and improve connections for our customers travelling within Asia Pacific,” he added.
One of the new A320 aircraft will be fitted with Airbus’ Sharklet wing-tips, which are devised to reduce drag and save fuel.
“Investing in aircraft innovation is core to the Jetstar model and our ability to continually improve operational performance and our cost base,” Pasupathi said.
The six leased aircraft form part of the Qantas Group’s aircraft procurement plan, which was first announced in August 2011.
