June opening confirmed for Shanghai Disneyland

The new Shanghai Disney Resort will officially open on 16 June 2016, it has been confirmed.
The Walt Disney Company and Shanghai Shendi Group made the announcement this week, putting an end to speculation. The resort was originally intended to open by the end of 2015, but this date was pushed back into 2016 when Disney decided to expand the scope of the project.
Construction work began in April 2011, and upon completion Shanghai Disney Resort will become the world’s largest Disney theme park, covering 390 hectares in the Pudong New Area of the city.
“When it opens in June, Shanghai Disney resort will be a one-of-a-kind, world-class destination that is authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese,” said Robert Iger, chairman & CEO of The Walt Disney Company.
“The resort reflects Disney’s legendary storytelling along with China’s rich culture, and showcases some of the most creative and innovative experiences we’ve ever created. We’re looking forward to showing it to the world and sharing it with the people of China for generations to come.”
Shanghai Disney Resort will feature six themed lands: Adventure Isle, Gardens of Imagination, Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland, Treasure Cove and Fantasyland. These will be centred around Disney’s trademark Enchanted Storybook Castle, which will be the largest and tallest of any Disney theme park.
Guests will also be able to stroll around Wishing Star Park, a 40-hectare area of gardens and lakes.
Initially there will be two hotels, the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel and Toy Story Hotel, while a shopping, dining and entertainment district, called Disneytown, will be located next to the park’s entrance. Disneytown will also include the Walt Disney Grand Theatre, which will be home to the first-ever Mandarin production of The Lion King. There will also be a large Disney Store selling the company’s merchandise.
Shanghai Disney Resort will be launched with a “multi-day, grand opening celebration”, building up to the first guests entering the park in 16 June.
It will become only the fourth Disney theme park outside the US, following existing attractions in Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong.
