One of China’s busiest airports was forced to suspend operations on Tuesday and Wednesday, as thick smog reduced visibility to dangerously low levels.

The Xinhua news agency reports that runway visibility at Zhengzhou’s Xinzheng International Airport fell to just 50 metres on Wednesday morning, delaying several flights. Approximately 180 flights have been cancelled at the airport over the past two days.

Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan, China’s third most populous province. Its airport handles approximately 20 million passengers per year and serves airlines including Emirates, Tigerair and Thai Airways.

In addition, Xinhua reports that police in Beijing closed several sections of expressway on Wednesday morning, including major roads linking the capital with Harbin, Shanghai and Tianjin.
