Indonesia’s Komodo Airport will be given international status as part of efforts to boost tourism, it has been reported.

The Antara news agency cited the East Nusa Tenggara Transportation Office as saying that the airport in Labuan Bajo is likely to become an international airport by the end of 2015. This new status will lead to the airport being equipped with new runway lights and new customs and immigration facilities.

However no international flights airlines have yet been confirmed for Komodo.

“It is part of the government’s effort to improve Komodo Airport to maximise the service it can provide in terms of arrivals and departures during the day and night,” Antara quoted office head Ricard Djami as saying.

Located in the west of Flores, Komodo Airport is the gateway to Komodo National Park, home to the famous Komodo dragons.
