Korean Air has finalised an order with Boeing that will see it purchase 12 new long-haul aircraft.
The Seoul-based national carrier has firmed up a commitment for five B747-8 Intercontinentals and six B777-300ER aircraft, initially announced during the Paris Air Show in June. In addition, Korean Air has placed an order for one additional B787-9 Dreamliner.
The value of the combined order is US$3.9 billion at current list prices.
“We are honoured to partner with Korean Air once again to provide them with the most efficient twin-aisle airplanes in the market,” said Ray Conner, president & CEO of Boeing’s commercial unit. “With 90 Boeing passenger airplanes in Korean Air’s fleet and counting, we are proud our twin-aisle airplanes will continue to serve as the backbone of their long haul operations.”
Korean Air is the only airline in the world to have ordered the B747-8, B787 and Airbus A380 models, although to-date it still hasn’t taken delivery of the new Boeing aircraft. The airline now has outstanding orders for more than 35 new long-haul jets, including 10 B787-9 Dreamliners, 10 B747-8 Intercontinentals and four A380s, plus a range of A330s and B777s.
These new aircraft will help the aircraft expand its international fleet and phase out its older, more fuel-hungry B747-400s.
