The Laguna Phuket resort complex has celebrated the 20th anniversary of its sea turtle conservation programme.
More than 500 people joined forces with the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and the Royal Thai Navy at Phuket’s Bang Tao Bay on 21 February 2014, to release 90 juvenile sea turtles back into the Andaman Sea.
Ticket sales for the milestone event, along with a raffle, also helped raise more than THB200,000 (US$6,130) for the future of the conservation programme.
In the past, Laguna Phuket has helped fund several areas, including paying for satellite tracking devices for sea turtles and rebuilding the Phuket Marine Biological Centre’s disabled turtle shelter building.
Green sea turtles can live for up to 60 years.
